Food allergies in young children

How can a child develop a food allergy?

Most often, parents pay attention to rashes, which sometimes occur immediately after the child is given a new product, or occur after the mother has eaten some product if she is breastfeeding the child, but there is an unobvious connection with rashes of taking any product, the so-called delayed reaction, the cause which is much more difficult to identify. In addition to various skin manifestations of allergies, you need to pay attention to gastrointestinal manifestations, because regurgitation, vomiting, colic, constipation and even the refusal of a child from some product can also be manifestations of food allergies. You need to pay attention to all the signs, in case of special precedents, doctors advise you to keep a food diary, because it is very important for the treatment of food allergies to exclude a product that causes a reaction, but first this product must be determined.

As for the children of the first year of life, it is a little easier here. Quite serious studies have shown that the key allergen for children of the first year of life is chicken egg protein and cow’s milk protein, therefore, they are the ones that receive special attention in the first place. Sometimes the symptoms occur unexpectedly when the mother both consumed dairy products and continues to consume them, but suddenly rashes appear. In this case, a diagnostic diet is recommended, you can try it yourself, completely exclude dairy products and beef from the diet for a short period of time, because it also contains the same protein as in cow’s milk. If you consult a doctor, your mother is prescribed a hypoallergenic diet, those foods that most often cause reactions are excluded: these are coffee, chocolate, citrus fruits, strawberries, and if the child is breastfed, then you can achieve some success with such events. If there is no effect, the mother may be assigned an additional examination.

If the child is not breastfed, then in such cases only therapeutic mixtures can be used. These are mixtures in which cow’s milk protein is completely broken down into small peptides, these are not those hypoallergenic preventive mixtures, but mixtures with deeper protein hydrolysis, in which the protein no longer has allergenic properties, but is split into those fragments that the immune system does not recognize as a foreign protein. Due to these mixtures, it is possible to feed the child normally, to raise him to an older age.

There is another group of mixtures. These are mixtures based on amino acids, in which the protein component is simply replaced by a set of amino acids. In general, they are prescribed for more severe forms of food allergies when the hydrolysate is not tolerated. The duration of use of these mixtures can be quite long, since the duration of exclusion of milk protein is determined by the world scientific communities of allergologists and pediatricians: this is at least 6 months, i.e. a hydrolysate can be prescribed for a minimum period of time. But do not be afraid, the baby does not necessarily receive this mixture exclusively. The child grows, approaches 4-6 months, at this point we begin to introduce complementary foods and gradually this mixture is naturally displaced from the diet and remains in a small volume.

Can goat’s milk and mixtures based on it be used?

No. There is an unambiguous answer to this question from both allergists and nutritionists, which is recorded in the main international documents. Whole protein is not used in the acute period for food allergies to cow’s milk protein. Complementary foods are introduced individually, it is better to consult a nutritionist here.
